Usually, yes. But the answer depends less on the fact that it is a two-car garage than on three measurements:

  • The clear ceiling height over the swing.
  • The total depth from the screen to the back wall.
  • The space required by the launch monitor you choose.

A 20’ × 20’ garage can make an excellent simulator room. It can also be the wrong room for a particular golfer, launch monitor, or enclosure.

Measure first, then buy.

The honest answer up front

A standard two-car garage generally has enough floor space for a golf simulator. Width is usually manageable, and depth can work with the right equipment.

The two issues that eliminate the most builds are:

  • Not having enough clear ceiling height for the golfer’s driver swing.
  • Choosing a launch monitor whose placement requirements do not fit the available depth.

Both problems can be manageable if you identify them before buying equipment. Both become expensive when you discover them after the enclosure, mat, projector, and launch monitor are already in the garage.

What “standard” actually means

There is no single standard size for a two-car garage. Common layouts include:

Garage size What it usually means
18’ × 20’ Narrow and close to the minimum for two cars
20’ × 20’ or 20’ × 22’ Common compact two-car garage
24’ × 24’ More comfortable for vehicles, storage, and a simulator
24’ × 30’ or larger Generous depth and substantially more layout flexibility

A 20’ × 20’ garage is commonly cited as a minimum two-car layout, while 24’ × 24’ is also a popular size for a more comfortable garage. Garage ceilings are often around 8 or 9 feet, but the clear height may be lower once you account for tracks, opener rails, lights, joists, and ductwork.

Go measure. Do not assume the dimensions from a listing, builder plan, or real-estate description.

Measure wall to wall, then measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction over the intended hitting area. A 20-foot garage with a low garage-door track can provide less usable space than a smaller room with a completely clear ceiling.

Width is usually manageable

A golf simulator generally needs at least about 10 feet of clear width, with 12 feet providing a more comfortable layout. That leaves room for the hitting mat, enclosure, screen frame, and a full swing.

An 18-foot-wide garage usually has enough width for a single-handed setup. The more likely problems are vehicle access, storage, or obstructions along the walls.

The width requirement changes if both right-handed and left-handed golfers need to use the simulator without moving the mat. A centered permanent bay is much easier in a wider room. In a narrow garage, the practical solution is often a movable mat that can be repositioned for the golfer’s stance.

That is inconvenient, but it is usually a layout problem rather than a reason to abandon the room.

Depth determines which launch monitors fit

Depth is where two-car garage builds most often go wrong.

From front to back, you need room for:

  • A safety gap behind the impact screen.
  • The distance from the ball to the screen.
  • The hitting mat and golfer.
  • Any space required behind the ball by the launch monitor.
  • The garage door, opener, storage, or other objects behind the setup.

A useful starting layout for many simulator rooms is:

  • About 1 foot behind the screen.
  • Approximately 10 to 12 feet from the ball to the screen.
  • Around 4 to 7 feet behind the ball for the golfer and equipment.

That produces a total depth of roughly 15 to 20 feet before adding extra room for a particular launch monitor or garage storage.

The important distinction is where the launch monitor sits.

Camera-based monitors

A camera-based monitor, such as SkyTrak, Bushnell Launch Pro, or Foresight GC3, sits beside or near the ball and captures the club and ball at impact.

These monitors do not require a long radar zone behind the golfer. You still need enough room for the golfer to swing safely, but the monitor itself is not using several feet of space behind the hitting position.

That does not mean every camera-based system fits in every small room. The enclosure, screen distance, golfer, and ceiling height still need to fit.

Floor-based radar monitors

A floor-based radar monitor sits behind the ball and needs clear space between the device and the tee.

Garmin’s Approach R10, for example, is typically placed between 6 and 8 feet behind the ball. It also needs enough distance from the ball to the screen or net to track the shot properly.

FlightScope’s Mevo+ also uses a rear sensor position. Its required ball-flight distance depends on the selected setup and whether you are using full or limited flight.

That makes a 20-foot garage possible for some radar setups, but not equally comfortable for all of them. The available depth depends on:

  • The space behind the screen.
  • The distance from the ball to the screen.
  • The monitor’s distance behind the ball.
  • Whether the monitor needs full or limited ball flight.
  • The depth of the enclosure and hitting mat.

A 20-foot garage gives you more flexibility with a camera-based or overhead monitor. A radar unit may also work, but you need to calculate the manufacturer’s distances before buying.

The useful rule is not, “A 20-foot garage requires a camera-based monitor.”

A 20-foot garage leaves less margin for floor-based radar, so the monitor’s exact placement requirements matter.

Ceiling height is the real filter

Floor space is only half the decision. Ceiling height determines whether the intended golfer can make a safe, natural swing.

As a planning estimate, use:

  • Functional target: golfer’s height plus about 36 inches.
  • Comfortable target: golfer’s height plus about 48 inches.

These figures are useful for screening a room, not for guaranteeing that every golfer will fit. Swing plane, posture, club length, and the golfer’s comfort level all affect the result.

An 8-foot ceiling is a poor candidate for a full driver setup for most golfers. A 9-foot ceiling may work for some shorter golfers but feel restrictive for taller golfers. A 10-foot ceiling provides more margin, but it does not solve a low obstruction directly over the hitting position.

Measure the obstruction

Garage-door tracks can run below the finished ceiling through the intended hitting area. The opener rail may hang lower still, often near the center of the garage.

If an obstruction crosses the swing path, the effective ceiling is the bottom of that obstruction.

Other clearance problems include:

  • Hanging lights.
  • Exposed joists.
  • HVAC ducts.
  • Beams.
  • Sprinkler heads.
  • Storage racks.
  • Garage doors that extend into the ceiling area when open.

A wall-mounted jackshaft opener may remove a center-mounted opener rail, depending on the garage-door system and installation requirements. Flush-mount or recessed lighting can also recover useful clearance.

Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction, not to the highest visible part of the ceiling. The minimum ceiling height guide covers this measurement in more detail.

Can you still park two cars?

Usually not with a permanent setup.

A fixed enclosure, hitting mat, projector, computer, and launch monitor take up a substantial part of the garage. In a 24-foot-wide garage, one car may fit beside the simulator depending on the vehicles and layout. In a 20-foot-wide garage, two-car parking and a permanent simulator are usually competing uses of the same space.

A retractable screen can make the room more flexible, but it does not eliminate the need to store or move the mat, monitor, projector, and other equipment.

A net is easier to move and usually less expensive than a permanent impact-screen enclosure. The tradeoff is that you lose the projected simulator image unless you add a separate display.

The practical choices are:

  • Build a permanent simulator and park outside.
  • Use a retractable or folding setup and accept the setup time.
  • Use a net and portable launch monitor.
  • Design the simulator around one side of the garage and keep limited vehicle access.
  • Choose a different room if parking is non-negotiable.

Decide whether the garage is primarily a simulator room or a parking space before buying equipment. Trying to make it serve both purposes without measuring the vehicles, enclosure, and storage often creates a setup that does neither job well.

What a workable setup can look like

Consider a 20’ × 20’ garage with a clear 9-foot ceiling and no obstruction crossing the swing path.

One workable layout might include:

  • An impact screen and frame near the back wall.
  • The ball positioned approximately 10 to 12 feet from the screen.
  • A camera-based launch monitor beside the ball, or an overhead unit above the hitting area.
  • A hitting mat positioned for the golfer’s stance and swing.
  • Flush-mounted lighting.
  • A relocated garage-door opener if the original rail interferes.
  • One side of the garage dedicated primarily to the simulator.

That can be an excellent simulator room for many golfers.

It is not automatically suitable for every setup. A floor-based radar monitor may require additional space behind the ball. A taller golfer may need more than the available ceiling height. A low garage-door track can make the room unusable even when the nominal ceiling is 9 feet.

The room also becomes less flexible if you need to preserve parking. A permanent simulator and two-car parking may work in a larger garage, but a 20-foot-wide garage usually requires you to choose which use has priority.

Check your own numbers

Measure your garage in four places:

  1. Clear width from wall to wall.
  2. Total depth from the front wall to the back wall.
  3. Height to the lowest obstruction over the hitting position.
  4. Distance from the planned ball position to the screen, opener, garage door, and back wall.

Then compare those measurements with the exact requirements for the launch monitor and enclosure you are considering. Do not rely on whether a monitor is generally described as “indoor-friendly.” Different manufacturers specify different distances, and some units offer multiple indoor modes with different space requirements.
