This build uses a mid-priced launch monitor and divides the remaining budget between the hitting surface, screen, projector, protection, and software.
It may include:
- A mid-range launch monitor.
- A DIY or moderately priced enclosure.
- A durable hitting mat.
- A suitable projector.
- An existing computer or a modest gaming PC.
- One year of software access.
For many buyers, this is the most practical approach. It avoids making one component so expensive that the rest of the system becomes difficult to use.
Data-first build
This build spends more of the budget on the launch monitor and saves on the enclosure, projector, and accessories.
It may include:
- A more capable launch monitor.
- A DIY frame.
- A mid-priced impact screen.
- A basic but suitable projector.
- An existing computer.
- Limited room modifications.
This approach suits golfers who care most about carry distances, club data, shot shape, and practice feedback.
The tradeoff is that the room may look less polished, and the projector may not perform as well in a bright garage.
How much should go to the launch monitor?
The launch monitor is often the largest single component, but it does not always represent 35% to 50% of the total build.

Radar or camera-based?
A $5,000 budget does not force you into one launch-monitor category.
Radar monitors can fit within this budget. A Garmin Approach R10, for example, is a relatively inexpensive radar option, but it needs the unit positioned several feet behind the ball and enough space in front of the ball for the shot to be tracked. The complete room requirement depends on the hitting position, screen distance, and selected setup.

Camera-based monitors sit beside or near the ball and generally do not need a long sensor zone behind the golfer. That can make them more practical in a shallow room. They still need adequate ball-to-screen distance, swing clearance, and a suitable hitting position.

GSPro is commonly priced at $250 per year. E6 Connect has annual plans around $300, with higher-priced options. Awesome Golf has offered annual and lifetime choices. Older platforms such as TGC 2019 may use a one-time purchase model, but they should be evaluated carefully because they are legacy products.
Some launch monitors also require their own paid access tier before they can connect to third-party software. That fee is separate from the software subscription.
A $5,000 build paired with a $250 annual platform costs:
- $5,000 for the initial system.
- $1,000 in software over four years.
- $6,000 total before replacing equipment or upgrading the computer.
That does not mean every simulator requires an annual $250 payment. Some buyers use free practice software, a lifetime license, bundled software, or a platform with optional rather than mandatory subscriptions.
Check the following before buying:
- Whether software is included.
- Whether full-course play requires a subscription.
- Whether the launch monitor requires a separate unlock.
- Whether the software works on your current computer.
- Whether a bundled trial renews automatically.
- What happens to saved data if you stop paying.

Where to spend and where to save
Spend on the mat
The mat is the component you physically use on every shot.
A poor mat can move, wear quickly, feel harsh, or alter your stance and turf interaction. That can affect how you swing and how consistently you strike the ball.
A better mat does not automatically make the launch monitor more accurate, but it can provide a more stable and comfortable hitting surface. Look for sufficient thickness, a stable base, realistic turf, and a hitting strip that can be replaced if necessary.
Spend on the launch monitor
The launch monitor is the reason the simulator can provide shot data and virtual golf. Choose one that fits your room and supports the software you actually want.
Do not choose based only on the number of data points listed on the product page. Indoor placement, lighting, ball type, club markings, software compatibility, and room depth can matter just as much.
Save on the enclosure
A DIY frame can provide excellent value, especially if you are comfortable measuring, assembling, padding, and tensioning the screen yourself.
A premium enclosure may offer a cleaner appearance, better fit, easier installation, stronger materials, improved ball containment, and better warranty support. A DIY frame can perform well, but it does not necessarily provide the same finish or durability.
